Hi, I have hundreds of little slug and snail visitors in my garden as I don't use pesticides, herbicides, etc, so regrettably, occasionally, I accidentally step on a snail. Often it is still alive after I've damaged it's shell, so I'm wondering if the humane thing to do is to kill it and save it from suffering, or are snails able to repair damaged shells? Thank you

From my reading I think it depends on the level of damage. If the snail's body is still partially covered then it should survive just fine. If not then it may not survive very long. Snails can carry out a certain amount of repair depending on how damaged the shell is and where the damage is.
