We watched an enormous, 2 cm minimum, flying insect today that was sucking nectar from flowers very close to the Tarn River. Would love an identification. It reminded us of hummingbirds in Canada. How can I send a photo of it with this question? It had two long sucker/antenna like tubes it was inserting in the flowers. Colour orangey and black head. amazing fast wing speed, hovering like a hummingbird. Can you help? Will try to attach our best photo, but wing speed was so very fast.

Hard to be sure of the species, but it's one of the Macroglossum Hawkmoths, possibly a Hummingbird Hawkmoth Macroglossum stellatarum

If southern France, almost certainly Macroglossum stellatarum.
