This large wasp (hornet?) was in a wooden chest drawer in my bedroom, I think it was stuck at the back so whenever I opened my drawer it buzzed furiously. I'm afraid to say that I sprayed it with bug spray when it came out because I am very allergic to stings and would have ended up in hospital. But I would like to identify it and know whether I should be checking through the chest of drawers for potential nests or it likely just flew through the window and got stuck.

Hi Sarah,

If you're in the UK or Europe, I woud say that this is Vespa crabro, the European hornet. There are other species of hornet around the world (and some are moving into Europe and the UK!), so without knowing more about where you are or seeing the abdomen clearly, it is difficult to say for sure.
