I live in the D.C area of Virginia in the U.S. I often see Eastern gray squirrels, eastern chipmunks and hear southern flying squirrels at night. Based on many distribution maps I've seen, both fox squirrels and american red squirrels should be present as well yet I have never seen any. Are the maps wrong? Is it perhaps a local thing? Habitat diferences?  I would greatly like to know why.

Thank you for your time

it is possible the maps are out of date and a further reduction in numbers has occurred. It is also possible that since they are very shy animals and less used to humans than grey squirrels that you have just not seen them.
