The existence of Charlie the Venus Flytrap (actually just a single modified left of a flytrap) has recently come to my attention. Charlie is famed for its hillarious videos on Youtube in which the owner stimulates its snapping process to do things such as bubblegum blowing and smoking. These videos stirs up a lot of controversy regarding whether it is okay to use the plant for entertainment like that just because they don't actually feel anything.
What are your views on this subject as botanists/biologists?

The plant is certainly not suffering in the sense that it doens't 'know' what has happened - it won't be disappointed or anything like that. It may not be good for the plant to waste energy closing wihout having something to feed on, but that's a different story.
