What gives the flamingo their pink color?
Great question! http://www.webexhibits.org/causesofcolor/7D.html has a great explanation of this. Basically, they are pink because the food they eat is pink. The crustaceans they eat is high in carotenoids, a pigment that turns pink and orange when digested or heated. This is also why shrimp change color when cooked.
Farmed salmon also get their pink color from carotenoids that are fed to them by the salmon farmers.
