Hi my name is Claudia and I live in  Tasmania. We are doing research on water pollution at my school. I have been given a photo of a fish which is wrapped in a net and has died because of it. Is this called ghost netting ?
Where can i find out about this. Ccan you recommend a website? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi, Claudia.  A ghost net is one that has been lost or forgotten by fishermen, and which continues to catch and kill fish.  So if your fish was deliberately caught, then it wasn't a ghost net -- only if it blundered into an abandoned net.

For this kind of question, Wikipedia is your friend: you can read all about ghost nets at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_net

Hi Claudia

The whale and Dolphin Conservation Society also has some more information on ghost netting at: http://www.wdcs.org/dan/publishing.nsf/ … 1B003F367A

Work is sometime done to try and get rid of some. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources has been using divers to pick up nets around the San Juan Islands.
