On a remote area of beach near the bay of the Somme we came across some clusters of jelly like strands containing spherical elements. They seem to be loosely coupled from 20 to over 100 strands. What are they, I have looked on the web with no success. The enclosed picture is of one such cluster approximately 12 inches in diameter.

Nice find! These look like squid eggs to me. I would hazard a guess that they are from the comon squid Loligo vulgaris (but I think there are one or two other possibilities).

Normally the whole mass would be attached to a rock. In this case it would seem it broke free and ended up getting washed up on the beach.
