What's the most interesting or important question that biologists are currently trying to answer?

I'm sure if you asked a hundred biologists this, you'd get a hundred different answers.

what is the meaning to life, the universe and everything - works for me!

But, David, that is explicitly not a biology question!

the "meaning" to life is broad enough to cover most, if not all, the biology I do! But seriously folks, I suppose if pushed my question would be:-

By what mechanisms are the compexity of the human/mammalian body explained by the apparently relatively small number of coding genes in our genome. If you search some of my previous posts James, you will see that I have started to address this question.

another would be - what are the neurochemical and anatomical substrates for memory and intelligence?
