I found this vertebra on a sand bar in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. I was wondering if you might know what animal this is from. The dimensions of the bone (which is partially eroded on the ends) are approximately 5.5" (vertical) by 9.5" (horizontal). The height of the bone in the middle section is almost exactly 1".

this looks like the thoracic vertebra from a dolphin - apparently there are quite a few dolphin strandings in the area in the recent past, so it may be a remnant of one of those.
