Hi biologists. I play the guitar and I've developed callouses on the finger tips of my left hand. But why did the strain from the guitar strings cause my skin to harden when it healed up? Why doesn't this happen to e.g. an abrasion on the knee after a fall (or does it? I haven't stumbled a lot recently)?

Thank you

The reason for callous formation is chronic and repeated trauma. That occurs in this case on the fingers and similarly with repeated trauma to knees in people who work a lot kneeling (the so called Victorian "housemaid's knee).
