Why is it that males begin to lose hair at a certain age but females only do so rarely?
Do other primates lose hair as they age, or any other animals?

The simple answer is no one knows in detail but for sure the classic male pattern balding is both geneticaly determined and related to testosterone levels. Eunuchs (is castrated individuals) are more like women and do not have that hair loss pattern.
