Hi, my 5 year old is really interested in mini-beasts and we were out in the garden looking at some earlier today when I noticed a large insect on our wooden arbour. I went to take a closer look and it flew directly at me with a very loud low buzz. I moved away quickly and it then returned to where it was before.

I looks a bit like a large wasp, but with different wings. I looked it up in our books and online, but can't find it so thought I'd check on here for help.

I took a photo which isn't very good as everytime I got close it flew at me, but find attached. Its about 4/5cm long with black and yellow on its abdomen. It had large eyes with a yellow central part to its head. It also had large wings with dark spots at their base.

Please can you confirm what it is and if it could sting my daughter? Thanks.
