Identifying large flying insect - with picture link
It is a wasp in the family Ichneumonidae. I'm not the world's greatest entomologist but I think this may well be the sabre wasp, Rhyssa persuasoria.
Have a look here for some images of that species and other possibilities (at least ones that get spotted in Leicestershire!)

having watched Fortitude I can't say I'm keen on any Ichneumonidae!
Ah, c'mon, David, you can't write off a whole family of 60,000 species just because of a few rotten apples :-)
