I found this bone on the beach in Lavallette NJ. It appears to be the calcaneous bone of a large ruminant animal. I do not know which one and there appears to be a wound mark on one side. Please help! I have more pictures but this will not allow me to upload them.

Hi Brenda,

this is a calcaneus and the morphology is most similar to a deer, however the large size and apparent partial diagenesis make me think that it is probably quite old and may have come from an American Elk.
